How can instruction be differentiated in classrooms?
We must fix the curriculum, not the students!
The focus in most classrooms is on the imaginary average student. Curricula are designed for this “imaginary” student. Cognitive neuroscience shows that there is no such average student anywhere, and so we call this student the imaginary student. With a typical average curriculum, most students are marginalized.
The needs of students who are determined to be superior are not actually being met by this average curriculum. These students are not challenged and they get bored. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach that uses the cognitive neuroscience framework and is designed to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of students with different needs.
Its main purpose is to ensure that every student is a successful student and that every student is an “expert learner.” This means students who know a lot, want to do more of what they know, and love learning and want to do even more.
The key to Universal Design for Learning is that the design is universal (accessible to all) and enables every student to learn.
This design is primarily based on the power of being very flexible when designing. – It provides students with options – It provides students with experiences of different learning paths – It allows students to present the material in different ways so that it is possible to achieve two things “UNIVERSAL” and “EVERYONE LEARNS”
The three principles of Universal Design for Learning emerged from a careful analysis of what learning is.
As a result of the studies conducted by thousands of researchers on what learning is, what constitutes learning, and what individual differences in learning are, 3 basic principles found in every learning environment have been revealed.
1. How does the learner receive information?
2. How do they express and act on this knowledge?
3. How do they participate in the learning environment?
There are three general principles:
The first principle is, how do we present information to the learner? Here we are talking about presenting information using different methods. There is no one way I can present information so that every student can learn.
The second principle is to allow students to express what they know using multiple methods.
The third principle is to engage students in the learning process by using multiple pathways.
